It took some tech support but I finally got Ooma going - the problem I had was with the Gateway and I needed to call Motorola tech support (and pay since my warranty was up) and the blue light is solid - the phone works - now I say goodbye to Qwest - if anybody else has this issue - just reply to this post

unfortunately I could not do it myself and I since my very reliable surfboard was out of warranty - I just paid $30 and Motorola got it done - I understand the firewall needs to be disabled - I found ooma tech support to be excellent - maybe they can help you - good luck - it is worth it to get it done.

heh i have a motorola surfboard integrated modem/router, then a linksys router, and ooma... and they do all work together but it does take a lot of setting configuration

I would try and walk you through it but I don't remember what I did...

(actually i still have a tiny bit of problem with my router/ooma, but that's another problem, and totally not related to the motorola surfboard integrated modem/router :P)

I have the same firewall issues on my Motorola SBG900 Surfboard. My Ooma works great with the firewall disabled, not at all with even the lowest firewall settings.

If anybody would be willing to take a snapshot of your working Motorola firewall policy settings I would sure be grateful.

Thanks.

I just installed ooma today behind a Motorola SBG900 cable modem.

The knowledge base article about service ports lists some of the ports that have to be enabled, but unless it is dated sometime after April '09, it is incomplete.
EDITED 7/11/09

The list below is per Dennis Peng 6/17/09:
I think we have compiled a comprehensive list or ports split by inbound and outbound.

Inbound UDP
1194, 49000-50000

Outbound UDP
53, 123, 514, 1194, 3480, 10000-20000

Outbound TCP
443

note: port 1194 is both in and outbound UDP.

In the case of the Motorola SBG900 cable modem, either you have to modify the firewall or run without one for ooma to work. None of the built-in profiles (with the firmware in my modem) will allow the blue light to come on.
I used the High Security template and added where necessary to include all of the above, while removing others that I don't need.

Did you try it before you started opening ports?
I did not have to open any ports.

The ooma hardware had a lot of red lights before I turned off the firewall on the SBG900. I already had a custom profile running, but ooma wouldn't work with any of the fixed profiles. I added the ports in the above post to my custom profile. I don't remember what profile I customized, but it is pretty slim. I added ports for clock sync and removed anything I didn't think I needed.

I have been working on my firewall while also waiting for a reply from Ooma support.

I created a custom firewall starting with the high policy template and added the ports Ooma list on a bulletin. Everything in the phone portion appears to work, but when I try to retrieve voicemail the system will not recognize buttons pressed on the phone or the delete button on the hub.

So I added another range that keeps popping up in my log, so far this seems to be working for me, but I have not done much real world testing yet.

Here are all the ports I added for Ooma.
Ooma1 514:514 UDP No Yes 0
Ooma2 1194:1194 UDP No Yes 0
Ooma3 3480:3480 UDP No Yes 0
Ooma4 49000:50000 UDP No Yes 0
Ooma5 443:443 TCP No Yes 0
Ooma6 10000:20000 UDP No Yes 0

I will update when I receive a reply from Ooma. I told them the range in my Ooma6 line appears to have fixed my voicemail problem, but I would like to narrow the range down to only actually used ports. I do see a couple other port attempts in my firewall log but they do not appear to be stopping operation of the unit. I sure wish Ooma would just publish a complete list of all ports used.
