Scout with blue light and faint garbled sound

I just set up my Ooma, and the Hub works perfectly. However, the scout is a different story. I plug it directly into the back of the hub using the wall jack on both the hub and scout, the light turns blue. However, when I pick up the phone attached to the scout, I can very faintly hear the dialtone but it is garbled. I've tried 3 different cords, and 2 different phones all with the same result. I even tried plugging it in to a jack upstairs and got the same thing.

Any ideas?

When you plug the hub into the scout via the WALL ports are you also plugging the hubs WALL port to a wall jack in your home? (via splitter)

No, it's not plugged into the wall at all, no splitters, no nothing. The phone is plugged into the phone port on the hub, the scout is plugged from the wall port on the scout to the wall on the hub, and another phone is in the phone port on the scout. It is faint and garbled even when I just hit the button on the scout to listen to voicemail. I'm thinking that I have a defective scout.

Other than a bad cable between the 2 units, it sounds to me like you may have a bad scout.

One last thing (from me anyway). With the Scout connected, turn both units off. Wait about 2 minutes and turn on the hub, let it boot up and then turn on the scout.

Also, are you using wireless phones? You may want to try the scout with a regular phone.

I'm thinking bad scout as well. I've tried a few different cables, and the phone on the scout is a simple corded one that I keep as a backup. Anyways, it's before the phone, the scout has the same sound to it when I just press the button to listen to voice mail. I did try to reboot them with the same results. Thanks for the help, though.

I don't know if this affects OOMA, but
I know there used to be issues with the REN - Ringer Equivalent Number, total up all REN's for phones, and fax machines ...if it was over a certain number call quality suffered
REN number was usually found on the undrside of the phone

Which should not be an issue here because:

1. There is a Scout plugged to the Wall port of the Ooma Base, not a ordinary tt-phone itself. The one extra phone they intend to use is instead plugged into the Scout's own Phone port and taking 'tone and battery' from that Scout unit, which (if the wiring is correct) has plenty of signal to work with.
2. The Scout has its own separate Power-supply and therefore does not need to take any power from the Phone-line (wire between the Scout and Hub) itself to gain sufficient power for normal operation.
