Can't get to google voice voicemail

I followed the instructions at https://support.ooma.com/home/google-voice-extensions/ but when I press the fast-forward button on the base to get to my google voicemail, I hear a message "to access your account, please enter your pin followed by the pound key".

Interestingly, when I called support, the nice lady on the line told me that google voice is only for cell phones and you can't listen to your google voicemail from the ooma base station, you can only listen to your ooma voicemail.

Well, that aside, when I place a call to my google voice number (which forwards properly into my ooma via the GVVN) after 3 rings the caller simply gets dropped onto the base station, no message, no beep, they're just talking on the base station. No message is recorded either in google or ooma land.

Ideas?

You can access your GV voice mail by dialing *#483 from handset (or phone attached to Telo or Linx phone port).
