Dennis P - Please give us an update on the handset issues

Dennis,

Could you please give us an update on the Telo Handset? Can you share with us the progress being made on fixing some of the issues?

Also, if there is an ETA in sight to when the next possible firmware will rollout that would be helpful to many of us.

Thanks in advance

I'm curious - do you think his time is better spent reading and responding here or working on the updates.

It's been my experience reading here that Ooma doesn't give specifics about issues that they're working on or when they're coming. They only give a little info about upgrades or features that are planned for some time in the future.

Can't pass up a chance to reply on a topic that has my name on it. :) We are working on a large range of Telo/handsets issues. These include:
  • Support for multiple handsets. Beta testers have a release that supports multiple handsets. There are a couple of blocker bugs that are our top priority. We had originally forecasted it would be ready this week, but it's looking like sometime next week is more likely.
  • Better range. We are testing a change that would allow us to increase the transmit power of the Telo. We don't know how this will impact the range, so we will be benchmarking this.
  • Battery indication. The battery charging algorithm and status indication needs improvement. We built some instrumentation to test something out and now believe we know what the issue is. We will begin on a fix.
  • Contact lists. Support for creation of contact lists in My Ooma should begin beta tomorrow. Telo/Handset support is still in development. We hope to have it available in two weeks.
  • Responsiveness. The handset is different than most cordless phones as the interface is largely driven off the Telo. This allows the UI to be pretty dynamic, but also means we have to incur the latency of a round-trip over the radio network for each key press and screen update. We aren't going to move away from this architecture as we need this flexibility. But we do have some ideas to improve responsiveness in certain interactions.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Yes, thank you Dennis. It's going to be fun to watch the Telo get better over time. Thanks to the whole ooma team, keep up the great work!

without checking this forum, how does a person know that an update is available for the handset? and, how does a person get the update once they know it's available? TIA.
