Cable Modem and Phone Jack Nowhere near each other

Post by HeidiLouH » Wed Mar 04, 2009 10:54 pm

I feel really stupid. I am confused how folks are setting up these OOMA devices between their modems and phone jacks.

My cable outlets, especially the one I utilize for my home office internet connection (ie where the cable modem is located), are nowhere near my house phone jacks.

In order to install OOMA I have to connect it next to my computer in my home office, which is in a different room, and approximately 15 feet away (in a direct line) from the nearest phone jack.

How are all of you completing this installation? I have a wireless phone system with three phones that I want to use, plus I purchased a Scout. I need both TIVO and my Dish DVRs to use the OOMA service as I plan to completely disconnect my AT&T service and they also use phone lines.

What can I do? Am I the only one who has encountered this problem?

Thank you for any advice!

Interesting.

There is no way you can drag a telephone cord to the next nearest phone jack? (say drill a small hole through a wall?)

If all fails, you may wish to try these wireless wall jacks:

I don't think the device from Amazon will play nice with the scout. Direct wiring is always best.

I recall someone on this forum using the wireless jack, and it worked...

As always YMMV

I have this same problem. I have searched and search and cannot find a good solution posted anywhere. I am surprised that this is not a more common problem.

My router plugs into Ooma hub and the Ooma phone line out goes to a fax machine, and from the fax machine to my cordless phone system. The phone jack is hella far and I don't want to run the long wire across the walls. I can't move the hub, because then I loose the connection to the fax machine. Any solutions?

I doubt those wireless phone jacks will work with an HPNA signal, they will however work for voice. So if you could just hook up the scout directly to the hub, then plug it into one of those, you could then plug a phone wire into it and use it for phone, or you could just have the hub feed the whole house that way

I did find a solution that has been working great. See my posting about HomePlug Devices:

I read that but forgive me, I don't know what a HomePlug device is!

I have tried searching on Ooma's site, Amazon and Google but I don't see an actual device to purchase.

Could you please share what exactly it is that you purchased?

Thanks!

...I don't know what a HomePlug device is...
These devices can carry an ethernet or telephone signal over your house (120v) wiring. The result is an RJ11 or RJ45 jack at a wall plug close to your needs

See here for a typical example....

Thanks for the info but now I'm even more confused!

The example that niknak posted looks to me like a wireless phone jack. However, earlier in the thread more than one person stated that a wireless phone jack wouldn't work.

Why would Ooma refer to "HomePlug" if they simply mean a wireless phone jack?

What am I missing here?

Thanks!
