Cannot add Google Voice phone number for SMS notification

I just installed the Ooma home water sensor last night. After some initial struggles with offline status, etc. I was able to test it. I use a google voice number - it works fine for phone notification, but does not seem to work for SMS notification. I tried a variety of carriers (why do I need to specify carrier?) but it does not work. Suggestions?

if SMS doesn't work use Push

Not sure what Push means. Where does information that is pushed go? How do you control where it goes?

It's one of the notification types you can select on the app. The notification goes to your smart phone.
