Perhaps we need a forum topic just devoted to the metallic/robotic problem, as I see entries in various call quality topics.

I wonder whether the location has anything to do with seeing this problem or not. (Perhaps packet routing, hops, etc.) I see it, as do 3 of my other neighbor/friends that have Ooma (thanks to my recommendations). We're on Mediacom Cable HSI, and located in Sugar Grove IL. Our HSI speed is capped at nominally 11M download, and 1M upload. Speed tests, though, often indicate that we're only getting 2-4M, although I've not seen that specifically tie to when the problem is occurring. I have both upstream and downstream set to 0 in my Ooma settings, and let the Dlink DIR-655 router to do the QOS prioritization (giving Ooma top priority).

I've followed all the recommendations that Thunderbird has so generously given, and I do believe I see the problem less or at least less severely.

So if I or my neighbors can be of some testing assistance for possible fixes, I know I'd be glad to participate.

Thanks For your offer. I would be testing, except I've never had the Robotic voice sound.

Remember that you will need the time and patience, and there are no guarantees.

For these settings, it doesn't matter if the connection is Modem-Ooma-Router, or Modem-Router-Ooma.

There are two things that may be worth trying.
One would be to set your Ooma Setup Quality of Service Download Speed to double the measured download speed as measured with http://www.speedtest.net/. This setting should make sure that there is no bandwidth restriction?

If that doesn't work, try setting the Ooma Setup Quality of Service Download Speed to 385 kbps. That speed is what Ooma says is the Minimum required for the download speed.

If the Inbound voice sounds garbled, but not robotic, increase the Download Speed by 5 kbps, and test again, etc.
If you think you are seeing improvement, but it seems like you are over shooting for this adjustment, try increasing the Download speed by 1 kbps, and test again, etc., etc., etc.

If the Inbound voice sounds Robotic, decrease the Download Speed by 5 kbps, and test again, etc.
If you think you are seeing improvement, but it seems like you are over shooting for this adjustment, try decreasing the Download speed by 1 kbps, and test again, etc., etc., etc.

These settings may slightly restrict the download speed, helping to keep packets in order?

Please report your findings.

I am thinking the problem as nothing to do with the settings since my robotic voice is worse on some days then others. The last 4 days have been much better... Maybe one call pre day is robotic. But now today it is every call. I have not changed anything and the problem comes and goes. I would think that the problem would be the same all the time if it had something to do with my settings. Also my setting have mainly stayed the same for the last 18 months and I never had a problem until July of this year.

I'll give this a try. It might take a while before I can conclude anything, but we'll see. I tend to think what dsinternet says is at least partially correct, because I too can have periods where there is no problem. But I also think that the changes you recommended and I had made at least reduced the severity of the problem for me when it does happen.

Ironically, when I first got Ooma back in February 2010, I would have no problem with incoming voice but people to whom I was talking would frequently say they could no longer understand what I was saying. Then Ooma introduced "pure voice," and that solved my outbound voice problems. This newer problem, the robotic/metallic/distorted incoming voice issue, probably began about 6 months ago, but I can't recall for sure. At its worst, I cannot understand what is being said. (But as I mentioned, I do think it's better for me at the moment.) When it's happening, the person to whom I'm speaking has no trouble understanding me.

Sound like we have exactly the same problem. Please keep everyone infored as to what works and what does not work. I am not going to change any of my setting and hope it gets fixed by Ooma. The robotic voice sound is better on some days then others. From what I have been reading on the forum, every one seems to have similar good days. For example this week Mon and Tue where good days and at least one other person said they also had good days early this week. Thur was a good day, but today (Friday) was a bad day.

I tried this one today:
set your Ooma Setup Quality of Service Download Speed to double the measured download speed.
Then while in a call of about 30 minutes, the robotic problem occurred three times.

Remembering what I had read in someone's post on another call quality topic about the problem going away if the remote caller pushed a number on their phone's keypad, I asked my remote called party to do that on the first two occurrences. Probably coincidence(?) but both times the robotic sound went away. (On the third occasion, it went away on its own.) So this is certainly worth trying again for others and reporting if it makes a difference.

Next I'll try this setting:
try setting the Ooma Setup Quality of Service Download Speed to 385 kbps. That speed is what Ooma says is the Minimum required for the download speed.

I believe I read some where in another post, where 48460 corrected some, but not all users Robotic voice problems. So it appears that Ooma Engineering had to go back to the drawing board. I believe that firmware 48934 is being Beta tested right now.

Was finally on a long (also long distance) call today, and with this download setting I did have a robotic moment that lasted several minutes. It occurred about 20 minutes into the call. The sound quality overall seems tinny too, but I could live with that if I didn't get distortion.
try setting the Ooma Setup Quality of Service Download Speed to 385 kbps. That speed is what Ooma says is the Minimum required for the download speed.
I'll reduce it by 5kbps next.
