Hi Guys,

I have TWC Cable with 20 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up. In my Ooma Telo Setup -> Advanced Settings -> QoS I have Upstream Internet Speed (kbps) set to default of 384 kbps.

Please advise as to what Upstream speed I should set?

Thank you.

David

If the Telo is in front of your router set it to 80% of 2 Mbps.
If the Telo is behind your router and the Home port of the Telo is unused, set it to 0 (disabled).

Hi murphy,

My Ooma is between modem and router. Just to clarify, 2 Mbps = 2048 kbps, correct? So 80% of that is 1638 kbps. So, I should set my upstream to 1638, correct?

Also, should I set my Downstream to 80% as well or leave it at the default of 0?

Usually the 1000 versus 1024 problem only comes up when talking about disk storage.

Read this for a discussion that will probably give you a headache.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_rate_units

The 80% figure is a starting point. Your upload speed on cable can vary depending on the load on your street and whether or not the kids have just arrived home from school. Your speed will probably go down around 4 PM on a school day.

Measure your speed at various times of the day to get an idea how your speed varies. You are telling the Telo what your speed is so it can reduce it by enough to guarantee it gets what it needs. If the value is too low it needlessly slows down your other internet devices. If it's too high it will try to allow more traffic through than the connection can support.

david5182:
If you use the Phonepower Speedtest http://www.phonepower.com/speedtest Upload and Download speeds, the speeds are already in kbps.

Just multiply .8 times each Phonepower Speed test Upload and Download speed, and you have the values that you need.
