NAS drive affects quality
Hi All,
I just added a Buffalo Link Live NAS drive to my router. It has dramatically affected the quality of my calls but outgoing and incomming.
Anyone else have this problem?
Any resolution?
Thanks,
Fishy

Re: NAS drive affects quality
I have not done what you are doing. I suspect the CPU is being loaded too much on the router. Do you have a way to monitor the CPU load?

Thanks for the quick response Scott.
I do not have a way of monitoring the router (that I'm aware of). The router is an old microsoft wireless router. Perhaps I should upgrade that.
Also, I just saw that you can go from modem -> ooma -> router. I have not tried that and I will try when I get home tonight.
Thanks.

Re: NAS drive affects quality
I had a similar issue when I had my Ooma base inside my router. During periods of high access (Time Machine backups) my call quality would degrade a ton. Moving the base outside the router fixed the problems.
You could also put the devices that share the NAS on a switch, and hook the switch to the router:
That would isolate the NAS traffic from the router, only allowing internet traffic up to the router.
You could also put the devices that share the NAS on a switch, and hook the switch to the router:
Code: Select all
modem -> router -> ooma
\> switch -> NAS Box
\> Computers

Ahh.. I misunderstood. I thought your router provided the NAS connection so I didn't think you had a choice to change your network configuration. What Koehn said is definitely the best first thing to try.

Re: NAS drive affects quality
Switching the configuration to modem -> ooma -> router made all the difference.
Thanks.
Thanks.
