Call Quality with Integrated Modem/Router

I just switched my internet provider and they gave me an integrated modem/wireless router. There is loud distortion on the line. Ooma set-up says to place the Ooma between the modem and router, but this is now not possible. Is it the cause of the problem and what can be done about it? Thanks.
