Am I still on the East Coast Server - Very Poor Call Quality

Post by MtView » Thu Mar 15, 2018 2:02 pm

After a year of decent service, my call quality has gotten so bad people can't hear me on the other end. Ironically, my internet connection speed recently doubled to 100/10 and I verified I have that speed.

Tom - can you please confirm that I am still on the East Coast server?

Thank you.

You should also test your internet connection quality:

Good idea. I got 20ms ping, 5ms jitter, 94.8 down and 11.4 up.

Which begs the question... how is the Ooma device connected? Behind router? Tried a different cat5e cable?

Did you get all green flags on that test?

Ok - so I ran this on another test site, but I bit the bullet and downloaded BCS.

I got all green circles:

jitter = .4ms
packet loss = 0%
MOS estimated to be a 4
download speed 8.2 Mbps
upload speed 8.2 Mbps
Consistency = 85.3%

The Telo is connected behind the router (plugged in to an ethernet port).

On the VoIP tab of the test results, does it report 'SIP ALG Firewall: N'?

If not, look into disabling that on the router [rtfm].
If an ISP-provided router, they may have to do it for you.

Are you seeing comparable MOS scores for your calls?

Your connection is good, at least from your PC to the test server, so things I would look at (in no particular order), just to eliminate your network as the issue.

- Look into configuring QOS on router [rtfm].
- Try a different ethernet cable between Telo & router.
- Try a different router port.

My solution: try a different phone service privider.

@TonyW
SIP ALG is not relevant. OOMA Telo sets up an OpenVPN tunnel to it's server.
