Phone Adapter to improve the Qos
You could be in need of a new modem especially if your neighbors are getting good results with voip tests.

Re: Phone Adapter to improve the Qos
Agreed. Your ISP's quality of service is what it is. The only way to change it, is to have them fix it. It is possible there is something wrong with the cabling in your home leading to poor ISP performance. Regardless, an adapter cannot correct poor QoS.Groundhound wrote:I know of no adapter that can improve a bad Internet connection. If your connection is inconsistent, you're likely to need help from your ISP regardless of who your VoIP provider is.
You need to get to the bottom of your ISP troubles. Is it cable or DSL? Can you log into your modem and check the status to see if there are any errors during bad periods?

Re: Phone Adapter to improve the Qos
Remember that if you are using a cable company for your ISP that your available network band varies, depending upon how many others in your neighborhood are on-line.
This would explain why your speed varies...try the tests at different times of the day for a few days to try and develop a pattern
Note the worst times for network problems like this are between 3PM and 6PM and 7PM to 9PM

Can some one look in this modem log, it is beyond me. Is there anything going on with my modem....?
Thanks

Re: Phone Adapter to improve the Qos
I don't know if those messages are problems are not. Is your log filled with that all of the time? You could do a continuous ping of some external site and watch the modem log to see if ping drops are associated with those entries in your log.

I just did a pinging yahoo, below is the result:
Does this give any indication of any "ms" delay or any sort of things. I am not a tech person to understand.
Pinging yahoo.eau.wi.charter.com [208.67.217.132] with 32 bytes of data:

Re: Phone Adapter to improve the Qos
4 pings is not enough to check. Try 100 pings using:
ping /n 100 yahoo.com
Just post the final result, not the whole list.

Just did 100 ping, below is the result:
Ping statistics for 69.147.114.224:
Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

I have Motorola surfboard sb5101. Is there any firmware or any updates available. I tried but could not see any. OR any suggestion on recommending a good cable Modem which may help.
Thanks

Re: Phone Adapter to improve the Qos
That result is perfect. I'm not sure pings are going to tell us much unless you are having short outages. You could try running a continuous ping over a long period of time and look for packet losses, and then see if the timing of those coincide with other troubles you are having. Although I'm not sure this would help you when talking to your ISP to resolve the issue.
It sounds like you have intermittent issues which is going to be the hardest of them all to diagnose.
I'm going to think about this more to come up with other ideas for you to try.

Re: Phone Adapter to improve the Qos
Packet loss does indeed look good for this test. How is your call quality today?
