Can you hear me now?

Post by ffoil » Wed Apr 08, 2020 6:00 am

Hi,

I have had Ooma for a few years and use it as a replacement for a "home phone". It gets sporadic usage and calls have always been short duration.

I'm now using it to work from home and speaking on long conference calls. I can hear everyone perfectly and don't miss a word or hear any static. However, people frequently report that my words are clipped and sometimes they miss 25% or more of what I'm saying. I've done tests with mobile phone and have heard the same thing.

Broadband: 220 Mb/s download / 35 Mb/s upload
Google Wifi Router
I have tried Modem -> Router -> Ooma Telo (wired)
Also switched to Modem -> Ooma Telo (wired) -> Router (this is the config I'm currently using)

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I've had to switch to using my mobile phone as a result and feel guilty for convincing friends and family to switch to Ooma (gulp.)

Thanks,

Andy

Are you using a speakerphone? If so, that is your problem. Most do not support full duplex so before you talk you have to make some sounds to get it to switch from receive to transmit mode. You can verify that this is the problem by using a regular phone, which is full duplex, to see if it corrects the problem.

Hi Murphy...thanks for the quick reply.

I'm using a Panasonic DECT 6.0 cordless handset. I've used a wired headset plugged into the handset and also just the handset itself, but the problem occurs with each. I have not used it as a speakerphone.

Run the html5 version of this test. It will download a companion program to your computer so it has something to talk to.

http://www.whichvoip.com/voip/speed_test/ppspeed.html

All of the result icons should be green.

In my case up to 17% of my upstream packets (me talking) were being lost or discarded by the modem.
A new modem solved the problem.

Jitter is supposed to be 5 ms or less.
Do you own or rent your modem?
If you are renting you can request a new one to see if that fixes the problem.
If you own the modem there is no way to do the test without buying a new modem.
