Ooma App Overrides Smartphone Phone Calling - Voicemail

I'm on Premier and have the Ooma app installed. The only way I can remotely retrieve a voicemail with my smartphone is to open the Ooma app.
If I just dial my Ooma number and press * at the greeting, I don't get the prompt to enter my PIN.
Seems the Ooma app overrides the regular smartphone keypad for retrieving voice mail messages.
Is this normal or should I be able to also retrieve my voicemails by just dialing my number and not having to use the app?
