I was just topping up my prepaid account to make calls from my Canadian # to US #'s and I noticed that the math on my Prepaid Activity doesn't make sense: 1 minute @ 1.6 cents per minute should be charged $0.02 (0.016 rounded up). But I'm charged $0.05. Being charged 2.5 times the posted rate seems consistent for all the calls. See image below.

I tried the chat support. They said there is a 15% FCC surcharge. OK: 1 minute @ 1.6 cents per minute x 1.15 = 1.84 which would be rounded to $0.02

I tried calling the 1-866 number but help there was useless.

Is there also a connection fee or something like that? I know it is only pennies each time but it seems seriously wrong.

Going by your pic, I would assume the first minute or less is around 5 cents including FCC surcharge. Subsequent minutes are charged at the posted rate + FCC surcharge. It's an old practice in some industries, including telecom.

Canadians probably don't have to pay the Federal Universal Service Fund (FUSF) fee. That's a U.S. tax.

But pre-paid plan users do have to pay a 3.9¢ connection fee per international call.
