people tell me my caller ID comes up as Podunk, MI or something very far from where I am or the area code of my region (503, one of the original ones). How can I change that?

Double-check the caller name for outbound calls in My Ooma's Privacy Preferences.
The originating carrier provides the caller number, but the terminating carrier is responsible for looking up the caller name. It may take a while for the other carriers to update their databases.
