Release 35170 & Purevoice

Post by kruegs » Thu Mar 18, 2010 12:08 pm

I was just reading the release notes on Telo firmware 35170... at the top it states that this release supports Ooma Purevoice, but the benefits won't been seen (heard actually) until the servers are all upgraded... hopefully soon.

My question: Does Enabling Fax Mode and it's associated CODEC circumvent Purevoice? In order words, I am guessing that Purevoice utilizes a separate CODEC and by forcing fax mode, I wouldn't be getting that benefit (if it is one or not is to be seen). Any thoughts?

You are correct. PureVoice is optimized for our default codec. If you are using fax mode, you are using G711 and we currently do not deploy redundancy when using that codec. We may enable that in the future, but the step ups in bandwidth are pretty big with G711 and we're not sure it is worth it.

Thanks Dennis... appreciate the quick and concise answer. Sounds like I need to do some testing with Fax Mode off to see if it meets my needs and sounds acceptable. I am excited to hear more about and work with Purevoice. Thx again.

I'm curious about forcing fax mode...I dial *99 before faxes, but no other calls, so this won't affect me will it?

At this time your *99 calls will not be affected.
