High bandwidth usage

Post by yang » Tue Apr 30, 2013 10:49 am

Hi,

Yesterday I was looking at the bandwidth tool provided by my internet service provider for fun.
What I have discovered was that there was a HUGE amount of bandwidth consumption made for the past few months.

2013-04-01 to 2013-04-30
86.36Gb Upload
691.83Gb Download

2013-03-01 to 2013-03-31
71.49Gb Upload
559.47Gb Download

Note I don't live with my parents and sister anymore so don't usually check their monthly bandwidth.
The amazing discovery was on the 2013-04-23 12729.28 Mb of upload was consumed in one entire day.

My parents only watch youtube and Netflix(standard, not HD) everyday because they're retired.
They don't know much about computer.
My sister goes on youtube once in a while, but studies most of the time.

The only thing I can think of is OOMA going crazy and consuming the upload/Download bandwidth.
I don't have any devices in the house that would use the UPLOAD...

What do you guys think?

Hi,

No slingbox.
They don't have cables.
Nothing high tech
It would be too complicated for them.

Thanks for asking.

Hi Ibmofo,

Your comment made me laugh, in a good way of course.
No my sister is forbidden to use such apps.
I've checked on all 3 computers and scanned for potential spywares.
Nothing abnormal.

So there is no way OOMA could have used that much upload bandwidth?

I've installed a bandwidth monitoring tool on all computers.
I'll track daily usages.

Is there a way to check OOMA bandwidth consumption so far?

Connect to the Telo setup screens.
Select Status
Select ports

It will tell you how many bytes have been transmitted and received since the last reboot.

Do you have WiFi and is it secured with WPA2?

Have you scanned the computers for malware?
Customer since January 2009

Hi Murphy,

I am at work, but I'll check the Ooma device tonight.
Thanks for the help.

My sister has a Wifi, but it's secured with WPA2 and a very long password.
Scanned the computers - Yes :)
Didn't find anything special.

The only thing I could think of is OOMA... don't want to blame it , but there's not a lot of devices that's connected to the router.
I'll have the OOMA unplug tonight and keep it offline the whole day just to on the safe side.

If your Ooma is connected to your router and you find the port status page having some large up and down data info...don't be alarmed...can be internal traffic. /viewtopic.php?t=14037#p97913

I've had this happen to me and the way I fixed it is by resetting router to factory default and reconfiguring my router. As far as I know, all the traffic registered was just between Ooma and other devices on my network.
