Caller ID uses the 1200 baud analog phone modem specification and sends the callers phone number It is sent between the first and second ring before the connection is completed. If you answer before the second ring it is unlikely the number will be received. The called phone company then looks up the phone number in the caller ID data base that they subscribe to which is where they get the caller ID name from.
