Open gate with phone

Open gate with phone

I live in a gated community. When someone calls me from the gate to be let in my Ooma phone rings, but when I push 9# to open the gate, nothing happens. I called support and the young woman told me it was a compatibility issue for which there was no solution. Is this true? Do I have to go to the gate to open it each time I have a visitor?
