Need Advice: Port Ooma Number to Google Voice

Post by ndno » Tue Nov 25, 2014 9:55 pm

I need some help. I want to port my Ooma number out to Google Voice. Has anyone successfully done so? If so, what info do I need? Name, Account Number, Billing address, pin, etc? What is the account number and what is the pin?

Thanks. I'm one of the original Hub and Scout owners who pays nothing monthly but the telemarketing calls I'm getting every day are killing me. Before porting my number over to Ooma, I had zero (maybe once a month) telemarketing calls; I now get over a dozen a day. I paid for Premier for one year and it didn't seem to help; I suspect Ooma (or my previous provider) is selling my number somehow in order for me to pay for Premier to blacklist the telemarketers; I'm not paying for that. I like Google Voice because they have free telemarketing blocking and I can use Google Voice with pretty much anything. I guess I'll sell my Hub and Scout hardware to anyone if it's still usable.... All I care is retaining my number and porting it to Google Voice.

It may have changed but my recollection is that Google only accepts ports from cell phones. If that is still true you would have to port from Ooma to a cell phone and once that is working, then port from the cell phone to Google.

Thanks. You are correct, I just went through the motion at Google Voice's site and it won't allow me to port in an Ooma number; the numbers for wireless carriers (Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, Page Plus, etc) are eligible. So my plan is to port the number to a cheap prepaid wireless carrier (like Page Plus since I have a couple old Verizon phones I can use) and then port that over to Google Voice. Has anyone ported OOMA out to a wireless carrier? What info is needed; I would assume the phone # is the account number; what is the pin#?

That's not true. While you had Premier, did you use the personal blacklist at all?

3rd party clients such as Obihai, I heard has gone away or is going away. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/04/ ... n-20-days/

There is no pin to tell your new carrier.

Obihai officially announced support for GV on Sept. 11: http://blog.obihai.com/2014/09/google-v ... pdate.html

However, I heard that the latest firmware does not support the message waiting indicator on telephones. (Just for GV.)

I was able to setup my Google Voice to ring through to my Ooma number just fine.

Still have my cell number as an option with GV also.

maybe I misunderstood what you're wanting to do.

Just wanted to give my findings for anyone else looking to port their Ooma VOIP number to Google Voice and also so this will appear in their search results.

On Tuesday evening approx 9PM, I received my T-Mobile SIM. I just purchased a SIM starter kit for $10 directly from T-Mobile and also a PAYG plan for $3. Not sure if I had to buy the plan itself too, but their website seemed to suggest it and it was only $3.

So, I called to register it, they were a bit confused as the SIM was purchased directly from T-Mobile, it was already registered to their network. I think SIMs bought at Walmart etc. aren't? Anyway, I put in the new SIM into my phone, rebooted it to refresh the device/SIM and before I'd even got off the phone it was showing the number I wanted to keep! Pretty amazing. Think it was all ready to go before I even inserted the SIM TBH.

Strangely, my Ooma was still able to dial out with this number too, but any calls incoming went to my cellphone. Didn't need to give any PIN or account number to the T-Mobile operator, as Ooma confirmed there are none.

Then I went to Google Voice to port it over. Wouldn't work at first til I had the PIN/PUK/porting number. Can't remember exactly what Google Voice called it, but came back with an error within just a few minutes. Re-processed with the PUK code, then went to normal processing. I think this took literally just a few hours, as by 9AM the next morning, Google Voice was accepting incoming and outgoing calls with this ported number. All in all, a very easy process and I was amazed at how quick it was.
