Re: New HD3 handset says "charging" but stays at 50%

I started this thread last September, have three handsets. All display this behavior, even the ones replaced by Ooma, and still no acknowledgement or reply from the Ooma developers. That's disappointing.

Customers should know that a significant/annoying problem is being looked into and addressed, ideally with an expected ETA for resolution. That's just how things are done these days. Radio silence is not a response that earns respect or loyalty. Customers, like me, who generally like the product(s) -- with some reservations, like the 1990s handset menus and similarly clunky voicemail prompts -- would be encouraged to evangelize for the product if the team/developers at least showed a bit of responsiveness.

I've found sometimes that if I power off the handset by holding the red "off" button until the unit powers off, then power it back on, it will then show the "correct" battery level, though I view all of those levels with very little confidence. I have never seen any level besides 100%, 50%, and 0%, btw, often completely random when it goes from one to another.

Just got an HD3 Saturday. Arrived charged to 100% but dropped to 50% during setup and software update. Charged up pretty quickly after that. I used it for less than 1 hour today and the charge dropped to 50%. It's been in the dock for 3+ hours and still says 50%. We'll see what it says in the morning. My ancient Vtech phones never drop below 75% even with well over an hour's use.

Edit#1: 30 minutes after this post, the phone showed 100%. More concerning than the slow charge was that 9 hours later, with no use at all, the charge again shows 50%. Makes me wonder about the quality of the batteries and/or the charger itself.

Edit#2: After my first edit above, I removed the batteries and checked the voltage. Each one read 1.36v which is about right for a nominal 1.2v battery. Put them back in the phone and now it shows 100%. It may be the sensor in the phone that detects and displays the charge that is the problem rather than the batteries or the the charger.

Final edit: A couple hours after edit#2 and not having used the HD3, I see the charging symbol again. Lifted the phone and replaced it and it says charged to 50%. I pulled one battery and put it back in and the phone says 100%. So it's definitely a problem with sensor readout, not the batteries or charger.

Since my last post 4 days ago, the charging symbol has remained at 100%. The HD3 has been used very little but I haven't seen it drop while not in use like I did earlier.

I'm having similar issues. I pick it up and it shows 50% on the icon, then put it on the charging cradle and it says 0%. I have no idea whether the battery is actually full or empty.

When my handset showed 50% I pulled the batteries and checked them with a volt meter. Both were over 1.3 volts. That's close to 100% for a battery rated at 1.2v.

I think the handset has bad contacts, I just re-plugged the OEM batteries in and it's showing 100% again.

Same issue here showing 50% after using the phone for about 2 minutes. Sometimes on the charger it will show 100% again right away, sometimes it stays at 50%. I've only had the new HD3 for a few days. I decided to replace my old Telo with a Telo2/HD3 combo from Costco. I will see how it goes for a while before requesting a replacement, since that doesn't seem to solve the problem either. Will be interested to see if Ooma ever chimes in on this string. They obviously know there is an issue with the HD3. Would be nice if they could at least let their customers know what they are doing to resolve it.

Yesterday I got a call that I knew was a robocall. I let it ring, then it tripped the voicemail and got a partial message. I was watching the HD3 and the charge dropped to 50% even though it had never been removed from the cradle! A couple hours later it was back to 100%. Despite this flaky behavior, we have never had an issue using the HD3 and it has always had enough charge to complete a phone call, even up to an hour in length.

We just bought our HD3 handset in December 2019. We're having the same problem and Ooma says the return is only 30 days and has expired.

They say to leave it plugged in 24 hours and if that doesn't work to buy new batteries.
