Looking at pictures, including the manual that comes with the phone, the LCD is black with white/light text and a cool font, and there is a blue ring lit up around the directional button. My phone doesn't have these things.

All of the pictures on the ooma site shows this but my phone doesn't have it. Is this false advertising or are there different version of this phone?

There is only one version of the handset. I suspect it doesn't look like that picture because turning all of those pixels black would have an adverse effect on battery life.
