22 hours later i have increased from

RX 114.9 MiB
TX 30.0 MiB

to

RX 128.8 MiB
TX 31.5 MiB

Do you have your Telo in the router's DMZ thus exposing it to all of the traffic on the internet?
Is it connected directly to the router or to a switch or a hub?
If connected to a hub it would see and count all traffic through the hub.

Telo is directly connected to router and nothing done on router other than give it priority (as with Hub) and give it statics DHCP reservation 192.168.0.199. Let me check DMZ. I was playing with that a long time ago and thought set everything back.

Just checked my firewall settings in the router. DMZ is disabled; also had a different IP set (grayed out now) when I enabled it a while back playing with it.

Strange, Telo is at same patch level and I see different numbers now. Must have rebooted since I last checked?

Only 12 hours later, Telo numbers jumped to

RX Bytes 3104587084 (2.8 GiB) TX Bytes 4941473 (4.7 MiB)

While my Hub numbers are (not much more since I last reported)

RX bytes:381211381 (363.5 MiB) TX bytes:173899025 (165.8 MiB)

I am going to switch physical LAN port to see if situation reverses. If not, will swap static DHCP to see.

None of this helped. Swapping LAN ports nor assigning Telo a different IP. Only after a few minutes of it being up, Rx is up to hundreds of MBs vs Hub only KB.

Hi Petunia,

Do you know anyone who uses Ooma, or any VoIP, with Satellite Internet? I believe that because of the 1/2 second or thereabouts propagation delay caused by the 40,000 mile round-trip to the earth-synchronous satellite that two-way voice communication is impractical.

From personal experience, you will probably be unhappy with Satellite Internet. You might look into a local land-based wireless provider, cable provider, or even cell-based data-tethering for your Internet service.

Anyone here found synchronous Satellite Internet functional with VoIP?

On the subject of my Telo using up GBs of Rx...turns out (with help of Bobby and murphy), the traffic is all internal to my own network xmitted from other devices on my network.

I looked and looked and couldn't figure out what would cause all the internal traffic to my Telo.

Conclusion: I messed with my router long ago messing with DMZ, application rules, port forwards, firewall settings....even though I put everything back to original setting after I played with these settings, something must have stuck behind the scenes in the router to cause some unexpected behaviror....my router was behaving somewhat like a network hub where the router was routing a lot of traffic to my Telo from other devices.

I've reverted my router back to factory default and reset all the settings having to do with DHCP reservation and QoS and all fixed. Still don't know what happened but router wasn't behaving for some reason.

After 4 hours of reboot, here are my numbers (back to normal):

Telo:
RX Bytes 4061372 (3.8 MiB)
TX Bytes 2571656 (2.4 MiB)

Hub (with some phone calls):
RX bytes:17448770 (16.6 MiB)
TX bytes:15471387 (14.7 MiB)

That's a very helpful post. Starting fresh with a factory reset is something that's easy to forget. The experts over at DD-WRT stress this over and over again in their guides.

EX Bell, so true, so true. I should have done the factory reset a lot earlier but having to re-do all the DHCP reservation definitions, WIFI customizations, and QoS settings kept me.... Now, I find out factory reset would have been the least painful way :)

Sitting idle, without any calls going on...seems like Ooma uses about ~16MB per day.
