why does phone emit two intermittent beeps AFTEr I hang up

Many times when I answer a call that is incomplete (I didn't get there in time, usually), and I hang up, the phone emits two rings which can go on for 7 or 8 double rings. I don't know what I have done to warrant that. Thanks for our help. :?:
