Porting to Tmobile - how much should it Cost?

I purchased a Tmobile SIM Card ($8) and when I went to activate it, Tmobile indicated that their cheapest plan is $40 per month. I only need this SIM to transfer my number from OOMA on the way to Google Voice. Has anyone found a way to spend less than $40 with Tmobile to do this move? (I know I will have to pay Google ~$20 to make that move from Tmobile)

Don't use a post paid plan. Use a prepaid plan. I have prepaid plan on a phone I own that costs me $10 a year to keep active. I've had it long enough to now have gold status.

Buy the minimum number of minutes they sell. For my ancient plan that is $10.00
