Incoming calls from other people's land lines not working

I just got everything hooked up and so far everything works beautifully - EXCEPT people who have tried to call me from their land line either get a message that it's not a valid number or some other problem prevents the call from ringing through. They have each called me as a follow-up from their cell phones to report the problem, and successfully rang through. I've also gotten calls from other VOIP callers (not ooma customers) that worked fine.

So, what's up with land lines trying unsuccessfully to call me?
