OOMA lagging internet connection...

Post by kradoom » Thu Mar 05, 2009 6:11 pm

Hi,

When I connect my OOMA to my router, my whole internet connection gets lagged up by it. Things such as games experience lag every 15 seconds, and connections to things such as IRC channels, AIM, gets randomly dropped every 10 mins or so. This happens when my OOMA is just idling and no one is on a call..

I have my modem->router(linksys with tomato firmware)->ooma

When I unplug ooma, everything works fine as normal again..

Please help

Do you have DSL and are you using a Scout?

You shouldn't have any speed lag with ooma connected and at idle.
Especially when you have ooma connected to the router and not between the modem and router.
Make sure you don't have the WALL connected to the wall jack, since you're not using a Scout at the moment.
You should have a phone connected to phone, nothing connected to HOME, nothing connected to WALL, and your router connected to MODEM on the back of the hub.

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask if you are using ooma WITH a landline.

I have this problem too, and I guess that ooma's hpna signal interferes with dsl signal. Please see this thread
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=658
for a work around.

I use DSL also, but have found a device that totally separates your DSL signal from the voice telephone wiring in your home. Rather than type out the whole thing again, just read from this previous thread - and another of my replies just a little ways down the thread. http://forums.ooma.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 958&#p2958

Hi Wayne,

I still have a landline (waiting for porting process) but it isn't connected to my OOMA ...

I tried reading the other posts about using a filter, but it seems like my setup is a bit different than theirs, and my problem isn't identical. Hmm, what should i do? Do I need to go online and buy those filters and try it out and hope it works?

One important question you didn't answer.
Do you have your WALL connection on the back of the hub connected to the wall jack in you house?
This is important. The DSL issue should not interfer with your ooma if you are using only the hub. NO WALL connection, and your phone connected directly to the hub.

Sorry if I wasn't clear..

No I do NOT have anything plugged into the WALL port.

I have a phone plugged into the PHONE port. My ethernet cable is connected to the MODEM port into one of my router's port..

The only thing different between you and I is the Tomato firmware. Since it has more settings than normal Linksys firmware (sounds interesting) I wonder if the QOS settings or port settings are favoring the hub connection over all others?
I have a Linksys 54g router and have the hub connected to the router. At idle, ooma uses nothing. On a call, ooma uses about 50k up and down. Not much at all. I don't believe you are having the DSL issue, because that normally starts when trying to connect to the WALL to a Scout. (I had that issue as well).

Check out the settings on the router, maybe there is an issue there.
