Hi all,

Silly question, but I would like to confirm. I have an ooma core system. Never had any problems with it, works beautifully.
The way I hooked it up is cable modem ----> ooma ----> wireless router.

I download/upload a large amount (let's say many gigabytes a day) of data on a regular basis through my wireless router. Would doing this damage or wear out the ooma box over time? Like I said I've had it for 1.5 years now with no problems, but I don't want to create any problems. Thanks in advance.

No, the amount of data transmitted through the Ooma should not have a negative effect on the Ooma.

Most home Internet connections have between 10% and 50% as much UPLOAD capacity as DOWNLOAD capacity. If you're uploading many GB of data, you could easily be using most or nearly all of the available bandwidth on your connection during a call. The result of not having enough upload bandwidth will be callers complaining that they can't hear you.

If you have file sharing/bittorrent client, it might be a problem when the program eats all of your up-stream bandwidth. It will affect ooma call quality and all other internet activities.

That's not what he asked, is it. It's not even related to what he asked. He asked whether all those data passing through would "wear out" the Ooma.

No, of course it won't wear out the Ooma. There are no moving parts.

Just to be on the safe side, he could use this data conductive grease to make sure that there was no wear caused by data congestion:

Robin, where can I get some of that grease? BMW (the car folks) sell a similar product, but at an outlandish price. I haven't found another vendor, and (carefully limited to appropriate use) it's great stuff.

I just did a search of Google Images for the picture. I'd tell you more but I've been told I'm a tad "wordy"

Actually, I just did another search and although the stuff is usually about $30, I found it for $21.54 at All-Spec. I have never purchased from them but here is the link: CW7100. Make sure you pad your order to at least $25 or you pay an outlandish $8 processing fee.

Since I ran out of conductive grease (sorry murdock for having fun possibly at your expense), I changed my configuration from

Modem-->Hub-->Router to Modem-->Router-->Hub

I figure it is time for my router to do some QoS work to see how it goes.

Besides, "Home Network" port doing less work has got to be better for Ooma lifespan?
