VOIP and Ooma and Verizon Westell 7500 modem

Post by Tampaite » Thu Jul 30, 2009 7:57 pm

Newbie here...

I currently have dry-loop DSL with Verizon and Verizon provided a wireless router(in-built modem) Westell 7500 that has 4 ports.
1. UPLINK/E1
2. E2
3. E3
4. E4/Data

I currently have VOIP service with ALLVOI and they have provided me with a Phone Adapter KTA 2100.

The current set-up is:

1. From wall jack, wire goes to Westell 7500(to port E1)
2. From Westell 7500, wire(from port E3) goes to Phone Adapter
3. From Phone Adapter, wire goes to my Phone #1 and I hear the dial-tone.

I changed the set-up to:

1. From wall jack, wire goes to Westell 7500(to port E1)
2. From Westell 7500(from port E2), wire goes to Ooma
3. From Ooma, wire goes to my Phone #2 and I hear the dial-tone.

Am trying to set-up my Ooma device and VOIP Phone Adapter on the wireless router but am getting a busy-tone when I pick up the phone#1.

Here is the new set-up.

1. From wall jack, wire goes to Westell 7500(to port E1)
2. From Westell 7500, wire(from port E2) goes to Ooma
2. From Westell 7500, wire(from port E3) goes to Phone Adapter
3. From Ooma, wire goes to my Phone #2 and I hear the dial-tone.
3. From Phone Adapter, wire goes to my Phone #1 and I hear a busy-tone.

Any pointers?

Note: I have set-up wireless connection at home to connect to the internet.

Thanks!

Did you turn everything off while you were changing the connections?
That configuration should work.

Yes. I unplugged everything and started re-plugging one by one.

First the Westell Modem. Once I have the INTERNET light ON then the Phone adapter and then Ooma and finally the Phones...

I tried this morning again and the set-up doesn't work.

Does Ooma interfer with other devices?

Is ooma configured to get it's IP address via DHCP?
Is ooma configured to use it's internal MAC address (NOT automatic)?
The same questions also apply to the other VOIP adapter.

When I browse to http://192.168.1.1/ from my laptop and look at the Network Settings.

I see both Ooma and Phone Adapater have 'Lease Type: set to Dynamic' and have distinct IP addresses, this takes care of the DHCP issue. right?
Although, the very first time I set-up both devices last night, I got a 'Windows Message - Duplicate IP address found' message.

Regarding MAC, I see both have distinct MAC addresses. I have NOT configured Ooma to use its internal MAC address. I figured this must be an out-of-the-box solution.

Now, even if I unplug Ooma completely from the set-up, I can't get the VOIP phone adapter to work!

Has anyone been able to set-up such that Ooma and their VOIP adapter works with the wireless router?

When I first got ooma I was a Vonage two line customer. I had the ooma hub between the modem and the wireless router and the Vonage two line adapter connected to the router. It was a Linksys PAP2 that does not serve as a router and must be connected that way. I purchased ooma Premium the next day and added a second line to ooma. All four phone lines worked perfectly even making a call from Vonage to ooma or the reverse. I then ported my second Vonage line to ooma in place of the temporary number on the hub. That number was originally ported to Vonage from Verizon and has been my main number since 1962. Once the port was complete I canceled my Vonage service. I did not care about the remaining number on Vonage. I have since moved my ooma hub to be after the router because it's not possible to make it stop responding to ping requests to the modem port. At no time did I have any problems with the phone lines. I also have a Magic Jack connected to my 24/7 computer that is connected to the router. It was purchased before I had heard of ooma. It also continues to work most of the time. I first learned about ooma on an MJ forum. I can make calls from MJ to ooma or ooma to MJ without any problems. I will not renew the MJ when it's one year subscription expires in January.

Murphy. thanks for responding. I have a wireless router and I can't place the hub between the modem and the router.

Ooma does work for me in this set-up but my VOIP phone adapter doesn't...any thoughts?

Re: MagicJack, I don't see any relevance to my issue but thanks for letting me know.

By VOIP adapter you mean the Scout?

If so the scout and hub MUST be connected using the WALL Ports on each device.

Note if you are using DSL for your ISP - you must do some "tweaking" to prevent HPNA interference

That was to let you know that another form of VOIP also works in parallel with my ooma system.

Are you routing the ooma phone port or the other voip adapters phone port back into your house wiring?
