Porting 2 Lines from AT&T Callvantage

Post by dferrey » Wed Jul 29, 2009 2:33 pm

AT&T is dropping CallVantage in favor of U-verse, but U-verse isn't available yet in Colorado. I was bummed as I had a great deal through work. I was about to go back to Vonage when I stumbled upon ooma.

That was yesterday. Today, I'm trialing ooma to see (hear?) how it works out. So far so good. I don't see any issues porting my current lines, but maybe someone can confirm.

With Callvantage, my primary line is the one I use for my work at home office. The secondary line is our home line. I'll be subscribing to ooma Premier.

My first question. The hub sits in my home office. Having read through this forum, it looks like I want to port my Callvantage secondary line first, then once complete, port my primary line. That's like 6 weeks and will mean at least an extra months payment to AT&T. Is my understanding correct or can I fast path the ports?

My second question is, I would like my ooma primary number to be on the scout and secondary on the hub. That means, when I request my first port, it will be to the scout. Is that possible?

Thanks for enduring my long post :)

From what I've read, yes, it would be better to port your secondary number first and let that complete before starting the port on your primary number so that there's no chance to lose the numbers. And of course, you need to keep AT&T service until both ports complete.

At any time, you can assign numbers to the scout or hub and swap them when you want too.

If you've selected two temporary numbers, you can assign the numbers to try it out while you're waiting for your ports to complete.

I had two lines with ATT CallVantage. I was very happy with CallVantage, better than othe VOIP, with one exception - I could not drop my first line, and keep my second one.

I moved to OOMA, and become OOMA fan quickly. I guess OOMA should be able to port two lines for you at the same time. If not, you should get the number you want to keep ported to your hub first.

Thanks for your replies. Turns out (duh on my part) I only need to port my second line. I can use whatever number I want for my home office line as I just forward my company provided number to whatever number I want.

I'll start that process this week assuming my trial continues successfully.
