Ooma Slows Internet

Post by FreePhone » Thu Mar 04, 2021 5:24 pm

I have an old first generation Ooma, it's installed between my cable modem and router. I have Spectrum 100Mbps service and never get more than 94Mbps, even when my phone or laptop is right next to the router. When I connect my laptop directly into the modem I get a bit more than 100Mbps. But the bigger issue is when I use the phone via Ooma and try to use my laptop at the same time, pages take forever to load. So Ooma is slowing down my internet service drastically, when it's used. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I've not upgraded to a Telo because this first generation Ooma has no tax fees at all.

That's how I originally had it setup many years ago when I first got the Ooma and the audio quality was terrible, it even lagged. But then again my internet speeds were slow compared to todays standards, so I might try that. But it still doesn't explain why the Ooma is making my 100Mbps download speed dropped to a crawl.

Every device connected to your 100 Mbps internet doesn't get full speed. If two devices are connected and they share equally they each get 50.

I have two Telos and they have always been behind my router since 2009.

My home network is a 1 Gbps network so there is no way I would ever insert a 100Mbps bottleneck in it.

Put the Telo behind your router and don't connect anything to its Home jack.
If you don't have enough ports on your router, buy a switch to expand it.

I understood that every device doesn't get full speed, but my internet has enough bandwidth that my computer (while on the phone), shouldn't drop down to a crawl. And as I already said, I initially had the Ooma behind the router and the call quality was terrible. There is no way the internet to my computer is getting close to 50Mbps because it seems more like way less than 1Mbps. Pages literally take forever to load while I'm on the phone.

Did you program the Telo to know what your internet speed is?
It doesn't figure it out for itself.
It's on the web server built into the Telo.

Here's an update to this old thread. Spectrum (Charter), just upgraded my internet to 300Mbps and I was still getting less than 100Mbps. I took my 1st gen Oooma (it's not a Telo) out of the equation and then bam, my internet speed was around 340Mbps. The Ooma was definitely the problem, I'm curious why it throttles the speed down so much. I went into the Ooma settings and it was set for only 384kbps, so that shouldn't have slowed my internet as much as it did. And yes I'm going to put the Ooma behind my wireless router and see how the call quality is, but as I said this is a 1st generation Ooma so calls from it are completely free and I don't want a Telo and have to pay the monthly taxes, I don't need the phone enough to pay that but since I've had the number for a few decades I'd like to keep it.

Do NOT put the Ooma between your modem and router. It's not fast enough to handle high speeds. Just connect it to your router as any other device. It will work just fine. Some routers may have QoS settings you can use to guarantee bandwidth to the Ooma.

Well, when I first installed my 1st gen Ooma I did put it after my router and the call quality was terrible and lagged. So I then put it before the router and just left it there. It's been that way for over a decade and now since my internet speed is way faster I'll try putting it after the router.

The maximum bandwidth for the Telo/Hub ethernet ports is 100 Mbps. For faster router speeds, connect modem to router, and router to Telo 'INTERNET' port (or to Hub 'MODEM' port), as described in step 2 of the Telo Quick Start Guide, (or as described in step 2c of the Ooma Hub Quick Start Manual). Use the router for higher-bandwidth devices, and (optionally) use the Telo/Hub 'HOME' port for any lower-bandwidth devices.

If the Quality of Service (QoS) bandwidth settings are too low, then they can further degrade the network performance for any devices connected to the Telo/Hub 'HOME' port. In that case, measure the effective upload (and download) speeds and adjust (or disable) the QoS settings as needed.
