MP3 VoiceMail has no sound

Post by robtcody » Sat Sep 05, 2009 4:46 am

I've an odd problem with my Windows Media Player (WMA) on Vista Ultimate. It can play MP3 music files just fine, but it can't play ooma VoiceMail files. This same machine can play the ooma files via QuickTime however. If I dualboot to XP, its WMA can play ooma files. If I use another Vista machine, it can play ooma files.

So it is only one particular Vista machine that can't play ooma MP3 files, but that same machine can play music MP3 files.

The only difference I see is the bit rate. The music MP3's are 128kbps whereas the ooma's are 23kbps.

WMA acts as if it is playing the ooma MP3's. e.g. the progress bar moves and the display moves about, but there is no sound.

It is not a user profile problem as I've tried a few different log on's.

Anyone run into this problem before?

Addendum:

I also tried to download a message from the ooma lounge. This came down at 64kbps and also will not play.

It may be a codec problem. Have you tried downloading a free MP codec pack from somewhere like download.com?

Can't play message files w/RealPlayer

Normally use RealPlayer SP [v 1.1.4] for MP3s, but found that it:

--misses 1st 10 seconds of every message

--alters files so they're unplayable in other players

Very odd. Switched my MP3 default to WM Player, problem solved.
