CallerID still showing different name
Same here. Ported my number out of ATT callvantage in February 2009 and my caller ID name still says out of area, but the number shows. OOMA support says they cant do anything and that the database has the right info but it is up to the carriers to "dip" and get the new data.
I may be missing something but this makes no sense at all.

Re: CallerID still showing different name
As mentioned before in these forums there is nothing ooma can do if thy other telcos don't update their databases...OOMA support says they cant do anything and that the database has the right info but it is up to the carriers to "dip" and get the new data.

Re: CallerID still showing different name
The caller ID name is not transmitted from the originating carrier. The destination carrier is supposed to look it up in their own database. If they haven't updated their database in a timely manner, it won't be there and they will display whatever is in their database or "Out of Area" if there is nothing in their database.

My guess is that the old provider does not want to fully cooperate... and would like to make life difficult.
Personally after much debate I decided not to port my old number, because a new phone number is not listed anywhere; and that means less solicitations/telemarketers etc...
It is no big deal to inform your contacts by email of the new number; plus I am not too much attached to my old number because it reminds of the ripoff of the old despicable telcos... also they may continue the selling of that old number to telemarketers!

Re: CallerID still showing different name
I guess i just dont understand how it could take this long. I have ported numbers over at work for my job from one carrier to another and the names updated immediately, we didnt have to wait for anyone to dip.
Just wonder why this is any different. I am sure the underlying technology is all the same.

Re: CallerID still showing different name
I honestly think that either companies are slow to "help" VOIP companies or the caller id service that Ooma uses (Comcast uses them too) isn't on a priority list for Verizon, AT&T, etc to update.
I agree. The change should be instantaneous (or at least a few days). If I go into my AT&T wireless account, change the name I want displayed when I call people on my cell phone, it's updated in a day or two.

Re: CallerID still showing different name
The key is they are wireless accounts...the government mandated Local Number Portability so that consumers who wished to change wireless service providers could do so - the same rules don't apply to wireline companies (they have rules but they are different)..I have ported numbers over at work for my job from one carrier to another and the names updated immediately.../

Re: CallerID still showing different name
I don't know if this applies or not:
"Outbound Caller-ID Blocking
From the ooma Lounge, you can set whether or not you want your name displayed on outbound calls. You can also choose which of your shared or personal numbers you wish to display. If you choose to disable outbound caller-ID, you can still enable it for individual calls by dialing the prefix *82 prior to placing the call.
During activation, your caller-ID will be set to use the name you registered your ooma account with. If you wish to change an existing outgoing caller-ID name, you can do so for a one-time charge of $11.99.
Caller-ID names are processed within 5 business days.
