People I call say they can't always hear me.

Post by Goose92833 » Mon Nov 23, 2009 9:42 am

I just purchased my ooma telo last week and am having call quality problems.

The person on the other end of the phone says she can't hear me all the time. When she can hear me, it sounds great, but it goes in and out like a bad cell phone connection. I seem to be able to hear her just fine, which leads me to believe that the problem is with my data upload speed. My connection is through Time Warner Cable in Newport Beach.

I did the speed test and changed my QOS settings to match the speed test, and that didn't resolve the problem. Has anyone else been experiencing this kind of call problem?

Run this test and post your findings from the advanced tab in text format back here.

Just out of curiosity, I ran the test again. This time the quality of service came out to 4% and the summary said that it cannot be used for VoIP communication. Is there anything I can do at this point to improve that #?

Goose, I am not a network expert. Based upon tests I ran on my service today, you should contact either or both your network provisioner and or your ISP.

I would not like to see the numbers that you have shown from my providers.

Those test results are not very good, in order for anyone to make any recommendation you'll need to provide a bit more info. Your ISP is TWC, what is the speed tier you buy from them?
What model modem?
Can you access your modem's signal stats at http://192.168.100.1 and post them here?
Do you have a router, if so what model?
How are your network components connected?
What kind of phones do you use?
When you ran the test, how was the computer you ran it from connected to your network?
The call quality issue you are experiencing is with all calls or only certain numbers?

I ran the test from a wirelessly connected laptop. The configuration of the system is Cable Modem to Ooma to Router. I have the QoS set on the Ooma to 1350 I think.

I haven't really used my Ooma phone to call but one person. Since the call breaks up, I didn't want to use it to call anyone else until I resolved the issues.

Would it be beneficial to run the test connected directly to the cable modem?

Hardwire your computer to your router and disable the wireless in the laptop if that is what you are using to run the test.
Wireless is never a valid way to run the test.

Ok. I plugged straight into the cable modem and ran the test 3 times. This was the lowest quality of service # that I got. Is there any way to improve it?

Is there any way to improve the QoS numbers I got from these tests?
