My number is supposed to port today-my home phone no longer works-when I call my home number that is being ported-I get a "this number is no longer in service".
Is this normal?

Yep, and will likely be the case for several hours.

Yes--- during the "porting" process on port day-- it often takes several hours for the transition to be complete. Be patient.

My concern is why it takes so long to port a number. I have been calling customer support (perhaps waisting their time) since yesterday asking why my number hasn't been ported over. I have been using my Quest number with call forwarding to my Ooma number for a month to check out it's relyability, which by the way is very impressive. I requested a number port a few weeks ago. I understand that it takes time for you to make the request to Quest to release my number. I don't understand why it takes so long, once my number is released by Quest, to be ported to my Ooma account. Since that number is my primary phone number, and the only number that my friends and family has to contact me it is very inconvenient when that number is out of service. I have been without incoming phone service now for more than a day. I also have no access to voice mail or any way of knowing that anyone is trying to contact me. I thought that porting the number from Quest, and paying a $40 fee, would have made it less of a problem than informing everyone of a new number that was assigned to me by Ooma. I am now wondering if that was a wise decision. Paying for this service of porting, and then not being able to receive any calls or messages for however long it takes for the porting is not a good thing. So far I have been without phone service for more than a day. This is more than a little bit of inconvenience.
My other concern is that what service I had yesterday, the ability to call out, was also interupted. I was told that the company was updating the system. Why in heavens name would someone do this during the middle of the day?
Well I am still hoping that the porting happens soon, and that my suggestions are somehow dealt with.

don't know if going for more than a few hours will go over well with the wife and 3 daughters.

Well I got an email that referred to my ported number now being my main number for my internet management. So I decided to call the number from my cell phone-Worked perfectly! I had my sister inlaw call my main number while I was on the phone with her-it rolled to the second line, it was beautiful!

Very happy-waited approximately 5 hours from my main number disconnect to porting to Ooma.
