call log calls I never made

Post by Sylvia Hayes » Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:13 pm

When I look at my call log I am seeing tons of toll free calls I never made. For just the 25th of this month I counted 16 to 800 or 866 numbers, I never made. Can someone tell me what is happening. We sometimes get calls that say they are from an 800 service, but when we answer it no one answers? I am afraid someone is using our line? What should I do, I did submit a note to tech support.

I don't get it, I went back to look at the log and now the calls are showing up as missed. I am 100% sure they were showing up as outgoing calls before I posted. I had my husband look at it and we both noted the difference between incoming, outgoing and missed calls.

I just checked it this morning and it is showing the calls as outgoing again:

Do you have any devices that might be making these calls (Dish Network, etc.)?

Those are both DirectTV numbers.
You need to program your DirectTV to dial *99 pause before it makes those calls.
Also reduce the baud rate to 9600 if you can.

We don't have TIVO and we don't buy any pay per view programming? I am missing something here. I can try to look closer at what you all are telling me, but at this point it isn't making sense. Or perhaps I should call Directv? I just don't want a surprise billing from anyone.

Calling Directv support would give you some assurance that you system is just checking in with the Directv servers. I have used DishNetwork for the last 14 years so I don't have experience with Directv - but the Dish unit likes to dial in to make sure my phone line is still connected in case I do PPV and also to make sure I haven't "lent" my unit to a friend to avoid new account fees compared to additional unit fees ($45/mo compared to $5/mo.).

The advice given by murphy regarding adding *99 pause before it makes those calls and reducing the baud rate to 9600 is to allow the receiver to make a successful call and not need to make multiple failed attempts.

I will try to call them later, I just called them on another matter, but I could barely make out the rep with the accent. I don't discriminate, but I am getting pretty fed up with everything. We had Dish a few years back and I know about how they check your line, I had a rather spirited argument when they put a $5 fee saying we had disconnected our phone and we NEVER did. I even talked to the "supervisor" who refused to take the fee off. That is when we went back to Directv.

Directv does not require you to have your satellite box connected to a phone line or do they charge for disconnection. It is only used for movie ordering from your TV. You can still order movies or special events via the phone or Directv website.
I personally have and installed 3 receivers in my home and none of which have ever been connected to a land-line. I did try connecting to Ooma just to try, it will dial all day long, because there is no way to enter *99 for VOIP.
I would unplug your phone line that goes into your box and I'm sure you will not be bothered anymore. I dropped Dish years ago, they loved to charge for everything.
