I just downloaded the Vonage app for free, and I can make calls anywhere in the US for free as well. It actually sounds like a better deal than the Ooma app.

Yes, better deal. Unlimited US calling via wifi for 35 cents a month. For now. I think this is more of an oversight than intentional feature.

OK, I will admit that I like bargains. In fact, free is almost always good - sometimes awesome! So I downloaded and installed the Vonage Mobile app to my iPod Touch 2nd generation. It came up just fine - I even used my familiar username (can you imagine?) and chose the pay as I go option. Then I quit the app and restarted it. I made a call to my main home phone from my office where I have exceptional WiFi. Gosh, I guess I should when i'm only 4 feet from my router. The home phone rang and I was able to talk to my bride. Cool stuff. And those who have tried it didn't talk about the two best features:

- A very interesting outbound CID. The phone I called displayed 883510001577717 on the first line and 883510001577717 on the second line. Now I don't know about you, but if I got a call that said it was from 883510001577717, 883510001577717 I would want to take it because I would know that it was from southsound.

- An almost comical latency. As a test I read a simple Charles Schultz quote while in my office, "Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It is already tomorrow in Australia." I ran to the living room to listen and was able to hear the entire quote starting with, "the world coming to an end today..." If you don't have many friends, you could call yourself and run back and forth carrying on the conversation.

Other than that, I found the application very useful and definitely worth the price. :P

Yeah, someone talked about that before. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8125&p=57306#p57276
The outbound CID is supposed to be the cell phone # if the app is installed on a cellphone.

Did you have to load $5 to use it? If you don't do any international calling, your $5 will run out by itself by October 2011. :)

Nope. After I chose the pay as you go option I just quit the app. When I restarted it, it found that I had $0.00 balance but let me make a call without issue.

So, basically you can call within US for free on wifi then. Wonder how long that's going to last.

What is this 35 cents a month thing?

Monthly maintenance fee (kind of a minimum charge) but SouthSound said he didn't have to load any $ and he was able to call so I guess he doesn't have to worry about the minimum charge/mos.

The other service I use, for international calls is Mobivox. With Mobivox, I can add all my contact to my online phone book which is voice activated. I Just call Mobivox and say the name of the contact and bobs your uncle, instantly connected.

If I want to call somebody that’s not in my contacts, once I’m connected to Mobivox, I just dial their number and I’m through. Nice and easy!

With Mobivox, I can have up to four phones, across four different countries all sharing the same bundle. Each country has their own local access numbers, making international calling very cheap

I have a 400 minutes per month bundle and my wife’s cell, my cell, my home phone and my UK cell all share this bundle, which only cost $17.99 every three month.

I have been using this service for 3 years and the prices have never gone up, I have no complaints.

Although I believe Oomar delivers outstanding quality and value with their national calls from home, I wish they could be competitive with their international calls and mobile apps, as I would really like to have all my phone services under one roof.

The terms actually read

"If your account balance is $0.00, the Vonage Mobile call service is not available. If you do not use your Vonage Mobile Account for 12 consecutive months, your account balance will be forfeited. If you do not make calls for 3 consecutive months, your auto-refill will be suspended, however we will continue to charged you for the minimum usage fee."

Not that it makes any difference to me, as i make international call, however, from the terms, you can actually use the phone for up to a year, you will just have to reset the auto refill. anyway, making a pay call once every three month isn't really that difficult. I woul deven consider making a wrong number call for the sake of an extra 2cents
