Optimum Installation Settings

Post by dieffen » Tue Oct 05, 2010 7:07 am

I have read several posts where folks have had problems with calls dropping off, quality, etc and there have been recommendations given to resolve the issues...ie put ooma before the router, "Use Built In", others mentioned, etc...saw some posts where someone indicated that ooma customer service could do some checking, etc.... I have just connected my ooma and made a few calls but I was wondering if there is a list of all the settings that should be done to get the best experience with ooma? I would prefer to have everything set up optimally at the beginning rather than experience some problems and look for a fix.

Thanks for your help,
Eric

I'd do the following if your Ooma is before the router:

Modem -> Ooma -> Router

Change the Ooma setting to Use Built in INTERNET Port MAC Address (called Modem Port MAC address if older Hub hardware)

Ooma is setup to automatically spoof the MAC address of whatever is connected to the home network port (called home port if older Hub hardware). For most people, this works fine but this configuration sometimes creates throughput problems and voice quality issues.

Connect to the Ooma device setup page (http://setup.ooma.com) from a computer connected to the “Home” or "Home Network" port of Ooma (if your router is connected to Ooma, you should get to Ooma device setup page without issues).

Click on the Internet tab (Network tab for Hub)
Click on the radio button that says "Use Built in" (INTERNET Port MAC Address or called MODEM Port MAC Address if Hub).
Click on Update Device (or just Update for Hub).
Turn off modem, Ooma, and Router.
Turn on modem and wait until it syncs with your ISP.
Turn on Ooma and wait till it completes start up.
Turn on the router.

Setup QoS (Quality of Service)

Steps:

• Measure upstream speed a few times from http://www.speedtest.net/ at different times of the day and note the average; mark that down by 15 to 20%. Let’s say you measured average of 2 Mbps; then shaving 20% off, you get 1.6 Mbps.

• Open the Ooma setup page by browsing to http://setup.ooma.com from a computer connected behind the "HOME" or "Home Network" port of Ooma.

• Select "Advanced" on the navigation menu and look for the "Quality of Service" section on the page. In the "Upstream Internet Speed" textbox, type in your result. Note: The units on the setup page are in kilobits per second (kbps), so you would enter 1600 for the example above (1.6 Mbps).

• After typing in the value, click on Update button to save the changes.

To allow connections to your network services from outside your home network.....
murphy wrote:Go into the setup page inside of the Ooma box. http://setup.ooma.com or http://172.27.35.1 if you are using OpenDNS.
On the Home Network page set the starting and ending DHCP Configuration addresses to 172.27.35.2
On the Advanced page create a port forwarding rule for your special port to forward to 172.27.35.2.
Power cycle the router so it gets a new IP address. Log into the router and verify that it got 172.27.35.2.

You should now be able to connect to your music server from the outside world.
You'd have to find out what "special port" your services/apps use.

Examples:

For my Dish Sling Adapter, the ports involved are 5101-5102 TCP & UDP.

For Rmote Desktop: TCP port 3389

You can't test this from your home network because Ooma does not support loopback.

No.
You must use a computer connected to the Home port of the Ooma box.
You must not be using OpenDNS. If you are, connect to http://172.27.35.1 instead.

this information is not true i access my router config behind a router just easy.

all you need to to do is go to your routers status page, get the ip of the ooma behind your router and put that ip in. it will then go the your ooma congig home page like this below.

My Ooma device is behind a netgear modem/router and I can't access the Ooma configuration page. I have accessed my neckgear setup page, but I can't determine what the Ooma IP addresses is.

I have looked at the Mac address on the bottom of my Ooma device, but I can't see a similar number in netgear.

I need to access support.Ooma.com, can someone give me specific instructions on how to reach that Ooma configuration page when the Ooma device is located behind a modem/router.

Also, I just bought the Ooma Bluetooth device, and I've read in the forms that it is not worth it. Apparently, for a lot of people, it keeps dropping the signal. Should I return it? I bought it because I like the idea that my cell phone ringing would also ring my land lines. But most importantly, I have this Sennheiser BW 900 Bluetooth headset and I wanted to configure that to answer the landline with Ooma

I'm a computer newbie and don't have access to help, other than these forums.

 Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Connect your computer to the Home port of the Ooma box to access the setup page.
While there configure it to use the built-in MAC address.
Forward port 80 to 172.27.35.1.
Once that is done you will be able to connect to the setup page by accessing the IP address that your router assigns to the Ooma box.
Do NOT put your Ooma box in front of your router with that port forward in place since it allows anyone in the world to access your setup page.

Just connect the OOMA Home Port to a free port on your Netgear router and then you can access setup.ooma.com anytime you want to. Most people don't use all of the hardwired ports on their router anyway.
