I have a dry loop dsl as I just recently ported my number from qwest. You may want to call your phone company and see if you can get a stand alone or dry loop dsl number so you don't have to pay for a land line. Btw I also use an easy Jack type of device for dish network. I didn't want to confuse anyone but I have one the plugs into the Jack and acts like a wireless phone sending signal to another box in livingroom where there is no Jack. I think it's called dualjack.

I thougth I'd report back on using Ooma to hook up my Satellite receiver to the Ooma line. So far, so good. I'm not sure how often it needs to "phone home", but in the past when my phone plug became disconnected by accident, I had a message on screen saying it needed to be plugged into a working phone jack or I would be billed an additional $5.00 per month.

So far, no messages like that while its plugged into the Ooma. Then again, someone told me it only does this once a month, so who knows. But so far, so good.
